About

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government sector public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The NSS bureau at Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar was established vide notification no. 3551 dt. 04.08.2017 of the University as per the instruction from the higher education department, Govt. of Odisha vide letter no. X-HE-NSS-53/2016 dt. 13.04.2017.

Dr. Bichitra Pani, Reader in Mathematics was appointed as the first programme coordinator of NSS at the University. She was succeeded by Dr. Aliva Mohanty, Associate Professor of Gender Studies as the NSS coordinator on 16.07.2019 and she continued until 17.10.2022. In pursuance to Govt. order no. 43151 dt. 14.10.2022, Dr. Susant Kumar Patnaik, Reader in Logic & Philosophy of Kamala Nehru Women’s College, Bhubaneswar has been appointed as part time coordinator of NSS Bureau, RDWU.

The NSS bureau of Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar has 30 NSS Units and 3000 NSS volunteers as transferred to it from the NSS Bureau of Utkal University vide letter no. X-HE-NSS-53/2016 dt. 13.04.2017 from higher education department, Govt. of Odisha. At present, 28 affiliated colleges have one NSS unit each, while the University has two NSS units.

Objectives

The primary aim of NSS is to develop personality of student volunteers through community service. Its watch word is “NOT ME BUT YOU”.

The basic objectives of the programme are as follows:

1. Understanding the community in which they work.
2. Understand themselves in relation to the community.
3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve in problem solving process.
4. Develop among them a sense of civic and social responsibility.
5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
6. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
7. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
8. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
9. Practice national integration and social harmony.
