National Service Scheme (NSS)

About

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Government sponsored program that falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. The program aims to promote personality development through participation in community service. Starting from a handful of 37 universities, today it has more than 3.2 million student volunteers from all over the country. The NSS Bureau of Rama Devi Women's University established in April 2017 (Notification No. 3551 dated 04.08.2017), oversees 43 NSS Units with a combined strength of 2,150 volunteers. Rama Devi Women's University governs 48 affiliated colleges, but currently only 36 affiliated colleges actively participate in the NSS program. This includes the university itself, bringing the total to 50 NSS Units and 2,500 volunteers. Efforts are underway to expand the program, with 29 colleges already expressing interest, potentially increasing the number of units to 80 and volunteers to 3,000. Currently, Dr. Susant Kumar Patnaik, Reader in Logic and Philosophy, has been working as the Programme Coordinator since October 17, 2022.

Motto

The Motto of NSS is "Not Me but You", which reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service.

Symbol

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Odisha, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation, and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

NSS Song

During Silver Jubilee Year 1994, the NSS theme song was composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song, which is given to them, and sing the song during NSS programs and celebrations.

Vision

  • To cultivate in students a sense of social responsibility and community service, enabling them to become engaged citizens dedicated to the advancement of society and the country.

  • Promote Collaboration: Build partnerships with local communities, organizations, and institutions to enhance the impact of NSS activities.
  • Support Sustainable Development: Align NSS initiatives with sustainable development goals to ensure long-term positive impact on society and the environment.
