The M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication course aims to provide a holistic learning framework that will prepare students to work in today’s dynamic media world. It provides an immersive experience by blending theory with practice and train students to produce stories for the media industry. Creating effective communicators is the prime focus of the programme. By amalgamating recent and futuristic trends in mass communication, it helps students develop critical thinking along with ethical reasoning and understand the role of media in contemporary social life.
Journalism and Mass Communication in Rama Devi Women’s University:
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Rama Devi Women's University established in the year 2020. With the inception of one regular faculty member and two guest faculty members, the department started its humble beginning. There was one classroom and one office room for the department. With the passing of time, in the year 2021 the department shifted to a new Academic Block -II with adequate classrooms. In the year 2022, the department underwent transformations with the inclusion of four new faculty members which could make a team to meet students’ teaching-learning needs. As a result, students’ creative productivity in terms of lab journal and other print productions, photography, short films and documentaries. In the year 2023, audio-video studio for the department came up for students’ practice for audio-visual communication. Interestingly in the same year, with the students’ in-hand practice has fructified their skills and creativity by releasing full-fledged documentary film ‘Rairangpur to Raisana’ on the first citizen of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu. The documentary was screened on the foundation day of the university in which the president was the chief guest of the programme. The department has its doctoral programme during this time. Alumni became visible and vibrant that they could assist the department in the space of Internship Programme and placements. There has been an increasing graph in terms of placements from the year 2022 to year 2024.
With modern facilities at hand the department offers master degree and doctoral degree programme in journalism and mass communication. The department aspires to train and give voice to women for working in the contemporary media sector. It believes the voice of media should be from all sections of the society and women being an integral part of the society, can empower journalistic endeavours. Being equipped with highly qualified and experienced faculty members and modern infrastructure facilities the department nourishes hands-on skill to promote sustainability among girl students. It promotes critical thinking and research ability among the students.
The students are achievers at different national and international events to earn pride and dignity for the department. Students from this department have proved their competence by producing a documentary film on the life of Honourable President of India Draupadi Murmu in the year 2023. They have presented their research papers in international conferences organized by Birla Global University, Bhubaneswar and Fakir Mohan University, Balasore in 2023 and 2024. They also have represented their papers consecutively in 5th, 6th and in 7th National Media Conclave held in Bhubaneswar and National conference organized by Berhampur University, Berhampur in 2023. They have received awards from multiple organizations by showcasing their excellence in Odissi Dance, Social Service, participating and showcasing their film production in university and state level film festival competitions, as social media influencers and not leaving behind in the field of acting.
Pedagogy
Following a blended learning strategy, the programme will integrate off-line teaching with online education. The flipped class-room method is being used for making students active participants in the process of learning. Lectures are being supported by hands-on training, project work, case-study analysis and field work. Seasoned practitioners from the media world and eminent media educators also act as facilitators for the programme.
